Crab & Winkle Way

The Crab & Winkle Way is a traffic-free cycle route between Canterbury and Whitstable. The route, which is particularly popular with families, takes its name from the former Crab & Winkle railway which ran between Canterbury and Whitstable until 1952.

The cycle / walking route shares part of the original railway route and was opened in 1999. The route also follows the ancient Saltway track passing the St. Cosmos and St. Damien in the Blean church. Roughly halfway between Canterbury and Whitstable, in the middle of Clowes Wood, the route passes the Winding Pond picnic area. In the railway's day a stationary engine was situated here which wound the train up the hill using a cable.
